In winter, Wanaka becomes a picturesque ski town, serving three ski fields - arguably the best in New Zealand. Cardrona, which this year opens its wide family friendly and snowboard friendly pistes between 24 June and 10 October, is the most popular place to ski Wanaka has to offer. Treble Cone, the largest ski area in the South Island is steep, breathtakingly beautiful and uncrowded; and Wairou Snow Farm offers Nordic skiing and a terrain park, high on a plateau wilderness. All ski resorts in South Island are remote from the towns that serve them and Wanaka is no exception, with a 20 minute drive to the base of each mountain.
